coffee attack!

It doesn't happen often, but when it happens...

I'm concentrated, coding away, or looking at test results, or something of that nature. I move suddenly, turn, or raise my hand for some reason and in between the origin of the movement and the destination, some part of my body hits a half-full cup of coffee.

Splat. Crash. (In the best style of the old Batman series).

Oops.

This has happened to me four times in all in the past, two with "catastrophic" consequences. And one of those was tonight. The end result is more or less constant: I end up covered with coffee, along with the chair, floor, with other alternatives (random, to spice it up :-)): keyboard, mouse, or even CPU for example. Coffee cup ends up on the floor, possibly broken in pieces (like tonight), and I have to be careful even to move to avoid making even more of a mess. Flow destroyed, whatever I was thinking is gone and then I have to spend half an hour cleaning it up. Good thing I don't drink coffee with sugar, otherwise everything would end up coated with a layer of sticky goo for ages to come. (The first time it was coffee with sugar. That took a while to clean up.)

Maybe I'm clumsy. Maybe I'm just not paying attention. Whatever. What I want is nanotech cups that will detect my approaching self (when at speed/distracted, not when I'm going to pick them up) and instantly change their molecular structure into a gas (including the liquid contained), then reform themselves back into a solid when the danger has passed. Probably not likely to happen soon, eh? Okay, I guess I'll just have to be more careful then. :-)

Comments (please see the comments & trackback policy).

I now ONLY drink from a bottle with a pop-top lid when I'm around the office. Spilling a glass was almost a weekly occurence for me (Luckily, I normally just drink water).
It's still a rare month that goes by without me swinging my arse down onto somebody else's glass, but at least then I have the "What'd you leave that there for?" defence.

"Good thing I don't drink coffee with sugar, otherwise everything would end up coated with a layer of sticky goo for ages to come."

Well, thats why some people prefer the concept of *cleaning* over sitting in a gooey apartement ;-)

(just teasing, - keep up the good work!)

Silly things can help, I have a coaster that lives more or less out of range and the coffee cup belongs on the coaster (we'll just try and ignore the pint glass of water sitting between my arms at the moment).

I'd also be tempted by the likes of this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/accessories/3820/ partly 'cos it keeps the coffee hot longer and partly for the benefit of the lid... I have a *very* cheap equivalent and it may become my "work" mug.

What I really want to try is a proper ship's mug - but I've never managed to find one...

Personally I've always been amazed by just how much surface area a seemingly insignificant volume of caffeinated beverage can cover!

I don't know about you guys, but I think that Diego has just invented the killer product of the future... nanotech, sentient coffee mugs that will move around, trying to avoid being accidentally thrown...

Well, I hope I live to see this, along with other things such as the self-cleaning keyboard (you can't imagine what it means to use a keyboard in Greece during the summer...), the self organizing office desk (which will keep itself tidy and get rid of useless pieces of paper before they get that old that you end up thinking that they might actually be of some use) and many other things!

It's a brave new world that's coming right to us.

Murph...a ship's mug?

Nope, a ships mug is kind of like a ship's decanter. Conventional mug at the top but about halfway down it slopes outward (what's the right name for a circular pyramid??).

Big wide base - probably with something non-slip glued to the bottom.

I get around the coffee attack by stopping coffee altogether. Why the switch? I was drinking more than 8 cups of coffee a day and not a single drop of water or other forms of drinks.

But, how about the urge? 2 things helps.

1. For the start, I trade coffee with tea. Everytime, I want coffee... I get myself a cup of tea. This helps reduce the addiction.

2. But, tea is still not a good source of "energy" for long hours coding. I started looking for supplements that can provide with that prolong feeling and never-feel-tired "energy".

Hence the pint glass of water - I'm trying to stick to one per mug of coffee (can't have another of the latter 'til I've also finished the former).

I basically do what Murph does: make sure that I drink water every time I get up to make a coffee--sometimes whenever I remember to do it. It seems to work reasonably well, although of course I forget sometimes :)
