U2Log reports that

Holosonic Research Labs, a Boston area audio technology company, is working with U2 to design a unique audio spotlight system for the band’s next tour. Audio spotlight is a technology that allows sound to be directed at or projected against a particular location. Specifically, Holosonics is working to create a system in which the sound generated from Edge’s guitar can be “flown over” to swoop an audience.

Holosonic could be an interesting weapon of war. At low level, you can disorient or mislead enemies from squad to battalion engagements using hand-held or vehicle-pulled holosonic devices. At high level, you should be able strafe fairly large areas by throwing intense sonic bombs in quick succession, destroying ear drums and causing internal damages to anything inside the area. At right frequency, you can destroy structures too. Useful against guerilla warfare too since sound projected into a cave could potentially amplify damage. Ouch.
