...I ran Gnome on Red Hat 9 for the first time. The last version I had used, for testing clevercactus, was 7.2.

I. Am. Speechless.

Or, in the spirit of what Comic Book Guy said once: "Vision ....blurring .... balance... failing... can't... go on.... describing.... symptoms...!"

If you think that is good, slap Ximian Desktop 2 on there.

I agree; Ximian rocks.

But slapping it on top of RH 9 gnome can cause scary ugliness. Menus in duplicate and triplicate, etc.

Milo, Eric, thanks for the comments. I actually looked at it, but given that Red Hat has such a nicely integrated set of config tools, etc, I didn't want to risk it (and Eric's comment confirms that maybe it's not a smooth ride).

Also, I wasn't encouraged by Ximian's description of Ximian Desktop 2 as being a perfect Windows look alike or replacement or whatever. I don't want a Linux system that acts like Windows. I want Linux. (I will accept a Linux system that perfectly simulates Mac OS X though :-))))

I have XD2 on top of RH9, and it's running nicely, no menu dups or anything.

I also had apt-rpm in for package management, but with XD2 you basically get to use the Ximian red carpet installer for everything, otherwise you are stuck in an ugly, horrible, sticky rpm dependancy hell. Redhat really doesn't like multiple install sources I guess :) It's not horrible, but the updates are a bit behind the RH announcements.

It also stops you from experimenting with gnome 2.3/2.4 stuff, but hopefully after it finally comes out XD will update to it quickly.
