realvnc rocksIf you are in need of a remote desktop solution that is simple, small (500K to 1MB depending on server or server+client download), and "just works", check out RealVNC. It's fantastic. (Thanks Dylan for the pointer! :)). Categories: soft.devPosted by diego on February 9 2004 at 10:12 PM Comments (please see the comments & trackback policy).
We use VNC throughout the office. It's very useful, especially for admining the windows servers and has proved invaluable for running some broadcast equipment. Some people have tried out a separate project called tightvnc because it was supposed to be faster. I never actually noticed any difference myself and stuck with the original. This was also at the time when vnc was still held at the at&t website. While looking for some comparisons on the web I came across this forum discussion which gives plenty of other variants. It also reminded me that TightVNC has a java only client! This might interest you Diego. http://www.triponthis.net/forums/showthread.php?t=626 Posted by: Tim McAuley at February 10, 2004 10:55 AMYou may wan't to try TightVNC, for slow connections it has better compression algorithms. Posted by: Juan Cruz Nores at February 10, 2004 2:00 PMVNC will also run from your java-enabled phone. http://j2mevnc.sourceforge.net/ Unfortunately my Nokia 6600 can't get a GPRS connection in Ireland so I haven't tried it. I understand that IP-over-GPRS suffers badly from latency so I'd be interested to hear any experiences.
