yahoo! wakes up

Yahoo does webservices!! Jeremy has a good roundup of pointers, and Yahoo search now has an excellent Developer site which includes information on their API and other things. Cool!

I keep saying that Yahoo! doesn't get enough credit for the stuff they do (probably because they have so many services and systems that it's difficult to see a "simple narrative"). Maybe this will start to change things.

I was just reading the Wired story about Yahoo! I had never realized how well Yahoo! has been doing all this time.

Some numbers: 165 million registered users, 345 million unique visitors a month, $49 billion market cap, and a 62 perĀcent increase in revenue last quarter, bringing 2004 total revenue to $3.6 billion.

I appreciate all the trumpets sounding for Yahoo doing something here, but let's put this in the appropriate context: they are launching their first APIs 2 years after Amazon and eBay.

Moreover, they are doing it with some pretty significant limits. They only allow 5,000 queries a day. To me, that warrants a pretty small trumpet.

Let's see what people can build when Yahoo figures out a business model and opens the flood gates. That's when this gets interesting.
