A free VMWare? Now that would be cool. VMWare, for its reliability, features, and simplicity, is one of my favorite sofware products of all time. News.com says the free server edition is just around the corner. Now what about the workstation? I'd bet that half the development world would rush to download it and start tinkering with it. Speaking of tinkering. VMWare APIs, anyone? :) Categories: technologyPosted by diego on February 2 2006 at 6:48 PM | TrackBack (0) Comments (please see the comments & trackback policy).
For API, this might help. http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/scripting-API/ Posted by: Bryan at February 2, 2006 8:40 PMVMware is one sexy product. Many a Caltrain ride or coast-to-coats have been made more entertaining (and productive) thanks for VMware. API cool. But I have more mundane wishes along the lines of new platforms: on the Mac (pleeeeeeaaasseeee!!!) and on Solaris x86 (prettty pleeeeeeeaseee!!!). Posted by: Gerir at February 2, 2006 11:15 PMThey have released VMWare Player, which lets you run VMs created with a full version of WMWare. http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ It's not exactly the same as a free VMWare Workstation, but I think covers most reasons for having a free version. Posted by: Juan Cruz Nores at February 3, 2006 5:15 AMThe new free product called VMWare Server what used to be called GSX Server. You can download the beta today and use it - you just have to register with VMWare for a key. I've been playing around with it, and as far as I can tell, it's a superset of VMWare workstation. Which means that basically workstation is free (I don't know why anyone would buy it, when server is free and it does everything workstation does and more).
